Consumers often focus on price not the safety ratings.
Many rental cars test well in front-impact crashes but aren't as safe in side or rear impact crash tests. USA TODAY's analysis revealed that more than 95% of 167 different vehicles in rental fleets are rated "good" in head-on crashes, the most frequent type of fatal accidents. There's a large disparity, however, in their safety ratings in side, rear and rollover crashes.

Crash ratings aren't the only factor to consider in rental car safety. Maintenance (tire, fluids, wiper blades), safety equipment (side-curtain airbags) in each vehicle and driver performance in an often unfamiliar vehicle also come into play.
Federal lawmakers are also considering legislation (Safe Rental Car Act) to require rental car companies to immediately take cars off the road that have been recalled for safety defects. Current law prohibits car dealers from selling a recalled vehicle, but the law doesn't address rental car agencies.
Clarence Ditlow, the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety automobile news (http://www.autosafety.org/) , said, "Until legislation is enacted, the best recourse for consumers is to simply ask rental car agents if their vehicle is subject to an outstanding safety recall. He adds, "If they don't tell you, they're deceiving you and if they won't tell you, just go to another company, go to another counter."
