January marked the seventh straight month of retail sales gains in the US as consumers showed spending power beyond the Christmas season. This bodes well for the US box shipping sector, as growing consumer demand should translate into increasing imports of containerised goods.

Container imports at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are continuing to grow in 2011. Imports at LA increased 15% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 338,607TEUs in January, with exports up 12.6% to 159,050TEUs for the month. Imports at Long Beach rose 11% y-o-y to 242,445TEUs, with exports up 12.7% to 127,546TEUs.

Peabody Bets On Asian Coal Demand - Peabody, the world's largest private-sector coal company, has agreed a deal with port operator SSA Marine to export up to 24mn tonnes of coal a year through the planned Gateway Pacific Terminal in north-west Washington State. According to SSA Marine, permit applications for the Gateway Pacific Terminal were filed this week with state and local authorities, as well as the US Army Corps of Engineers. The application lists a fair market value for the project of US$655mn. SSA hopes to have the terminal operational by 2015, with initial capacity for 25mn tonnes a year of coal, and the potential to expand capacity to 48mn tonnes a year. Under the deal, Peabody has rights to throughput over the life of the operation and could expand its capacity in future years. BMI notes that this terminal will dwarf the joint venture by Arch Coal and Ambre Energy in nearby Longview, Washington, which will have the capacity to export 5mn tonnes a year.

Downside risks to our outlook present themselves in the form of a slower-than-expected recovery in US consumer demand. Reduced availability of Toyota cars may be boosting expectations for Hyundai and Kia's sales and profits, said Kim Byung Kwan, a Seoul-based analyst at Mirae Asset Securities Co.

"Hyundai and Kia are expected to expand sales in the U.S. as Toyota will likely continue to struggle with supply shortage," Kim said. "Toyota's sales likely won't normalize until the first quarter of next year."

Toyota shut most plants in Japan after the March 11 natural disaster and has also announced output halts in North America. The Toyota City, Japan-based carmaker warned its U.S. dealers earlier this week that vehicles may be in short supply into the third quarter.

Hyundai has gained 13 percent in Seoul trading since March 10, the day before the earthquake, while Kia has surged 19 percent. Toyota has lost 10 percent in Tokyo trading in the same period.

2012 Subaru Impreza Heading to New York Auto Show

The redesigned 2012 sedan and five-door hatchback Impreza will be unveiled at the New York auto show later this month.

The Japanese-built vehicle goes on sale this fall. Pricing hasn't been disclosed.

Subaru didn't release many detail automobile news s today but said the Impreza will have an estimated highway fuel economy rating of 36 mpg.

It will be the most fuel-efficient all-wheel drive car sold in the U.S. market, Subaru says.

The 2012 Impreza is expected to use Subaru's new four-cylinder boxer engine and a new continuously variable transmission.

Subaru showed the concept Impreza at last year's Los Angeles auto show with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder version of the engine. A 2.5-liter engine powers the 2011 Forester.

Subaru -- without providing dimensions -- said the car wi Infiniti m hybird ll have more interior room and "improved levels of comfort and refinement."

The current Impreza has been criticized for its lack of rear-passenger room. Subaru has been improving the interior room of goverment technology its vehicles as they are renewed, giving vehicles like the larger Legacy more competitive rear leg-room space.
